A trip to the Banggai Islands costs roughly IDR 400,000 to 1,200,000 (about USD 23 to 68) a day per person on the ground if you travel independently, plus flights, and from IDR 7,350,000 a person for a guided five-day trip with everything included. The expensive part is getting to Luwuk. Once you are there, the wooden boat to Peleng is IDR 55,000 (about USD 3) and a night in a homestay is under IDR 250,000.

Flights to Luwuk, the one cost you cannot shrink
Almost every route ends with the Batik Air hop from Makassar to Luwuk, about 75 minutes. There are no direct flights from Bali, Jakarta or abroad. Fares on the Makassar to Luwuk leg move with the season and with how late you book; the busy months are June to August and the fortnight around Idul Fitri. Put the whole journey on one ticket if the airline sells it that way. If the Makassar to Luwuk leg ends up on a separate booking, leave a night in Makassar as a buffer, because a missed connection between separate tickets is yours to pay for. Also remember that the boats leave Luwuk after lunch, so a morning arrival still means one night in town.

The private speedboat is where a group changes the maths. Four people splitting IDR 2,000,000 pay IDR 500,000 each for an hour’s crossing that leaves when they want; one person pays the whole boat. The public wooden boat is IDR 55,000 whoever you are.

That is under IDR 500,000 a day, and it buys a good trip: Paisu Pok early in the morning, the lagoon, Poganda, the caves if you find a guide. Banggai Laut is left out. You can get there on your own, either on the eight-hour ferry from Luwuk or across Peleng to the Tobing speedboat, but with public boats that sail once a day it stretches five days to about seven.
Guided, group of four, Banggai Laut and Peleng
Our five-day trip is IDR 7,350,000 a person for four people (about USD 415), IDR 9,750,000 a person for two (about USD 550), and IDR 13,250,000 for one traveller (about USD 750). That covers the airport pick-up, a private car throughout, the ferry with cabin, the Tobing speedboat, every beach boat, four nights in guesthouses and homestays, three meals a day and all entry fees. You pay separately for the flight to Luwuk, drinks outside meals, paddleboard hire at the lake and a hotel on the last night in Luwuk.
Set against the independent budget, the guided trip costs roughly three times as much per person and buys you Banggai Laut, the reefs, the cardinalfish and every transfer handled, in five days instead of seven. If you have seven days and enjoy the logistics, go independent; if you have five, take the tour.

Where independent travellers overspend
- Chartering a speedboat alone. IDR 2,000,000 for one person on a crossing the wooden boat does for IDR 55,000. Wait for the public boat or find three other people at the port.
- A tight connection on two separate tickets. If the first flight is late, the airline on the Luwuk leg owes you nothing, and you pay for a new seat.
- Going via Salakan for Paisu Pok. The dearer ferry plus a three-hour car to the lake, roughly IDR 500,000 more than the Leme-Leme boat and a scooter.
- Running out of cash on the islands. The only ATMs are in Luwuk, Salakan and Banggai town, and the fix is a half-day round trip.
- Weekend timing. Nothing costs more on a Saturday, but the lake is full and a paddleboard queue is a bad way to spend IDR 100,000 an hour.
How to pay
Cash, in rupiah, in small notes. Cards work at the Luwuk hotels and the airport and almost nowhere else. Bank BNI and BRI ATMs in Luwuk are reliable; those in Salakan and Banggai town exist but run dry before holidays; the villages have none. Withdraw the whole trip’s spending in Luwuk before you cross, split it between two places in your bag, and carry IDR 20,000 and 50,000 notes because a homestay cannot break a red note at breakfast.
