Five days is enough for the Banggai Islands if you want Paisu Pok Lake on Peleng and the beaches of Banggai Laut; nine days lets you add the jellyfish lake on Mbuang-Mbuang and the waterfalls around Luwuk without rushing. The route that wastes the least time goes out through Peleng and the Tobing speedboat, which runs every day, and comes back on the Banggai to Luwuk ferry, which usually sails only on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
This plan is built from the boats we put guests on most weeks of the year. Every price and crossing time below was checked for October 2026; ferry days move with the weather, so treat them as the usual pattern rather than a timetable.
Banggai Islands itinerary at a glance
| Days | What fits | Nights |
| 3 | Luwuk waterfalls and Paisu Pok Lake as a day trip by speedboat | 2 in Luwuk |
| 5 | Paisu Pok, the Peleng caves and beaches, Banggai Laut | 1 Luwuk, 2 Peleng, 1 to 2 Banggai Laut |
| 7 | All of the above, no rush on Peleng, a full boat day on Banggai Laut | 1 Luwuk, 2 Luk Panenteng, 1 Salakan, 2 Banggai town |
| 9 | Adds Mbuang-Mbuang and its jellyfish lake, plus a second Luwuk day | 2 Luwuk, 2 Luk Panenteng, 2 Salakan, 3 Banggai town |
Why the route goes out through Peleng and back on the ferry
Peleng is the big island an hour or two across the strait from Luwuk; Banggai Laut is the smaller regency to its south. There are three ways onto Banggai Laut, and only one of them runs daily: drive across Peleng to the Tobing jetty and take the shared speedboat, about 30 minutes and IDR 80,000. The direct ferry from Luwuk usually sails on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, leaves around 16:00 or 21:00 and arrives the next morning after 8 to 9 hours on board.
Coming back, the ferry leaves Banggai town for Luwuk on Tuesday and Thursday at about 08:00 and gets in during the afternoon. So the loop that works is Luwuk, Peleng, Banggai Laut, then the ferry home, and the only thing you have to plan is that your last morning on Banggai Laut falls on a Tuesday or Thursday. For the nine-day version that means arriving in Luwuk on a Monday or a Wednesday. The full picture of which boat leaves from which port is in our Luwuk ferry schedule guide.
Doing it the other way round costs you. Take the overnight ferry out and you are tied to its three sailing days; finish on Peleng and you depend on the morning boats back, which means sleeping near the harbour the night before and losing a day to the crossing.
The 9-day Banggai Islands itinerary, day by day
Day 1: Luwuk, Piala Waterfall and Teletubbies Hill
Flights reach Luwuk from Makassar in about 75 minutes, and the airport is 20 minutes from town. If you land before noon there is time for Piala Waterfall, 15 to 30 minutes by car plus a 10 to 15 minute walk, entry IDR 5,000 to 10,000, with a turquoise pool you can swim in. Teletubbies Hill above Luwuk is the sunset spot.
Sleep in Luwuk. Hotel Kota and the RedDoorz places start around IDR 345,000; Swiss-Belinn, Santika and Estrella run IDR 500,000 to 900,000.
Day 2: Kamumu or Laumarang in the morning, the wooden boat to Peleng
Use the morning for Kamumu Waterfall in its pine forest or Laumarang, which sees fewer people. The public wooden boat to Leme-Leme on Peleng leaves the People’s Port (Pelabuhan Rakyat) in the early afternoon, nominally at 2 pm and usually later, takes about two hours and costs around IDR 55,000. Do not take the larger ferry to Salakan from the other port: it lands three hours by road from the lake.
Leme-Leme is 23 km from Paisu Pok. Sleep in Luk Panenteng, the village beside the lake, where family homestays charge IDR 150,000 to 250,000 a night, usually with dinner, and rent scooters for IDR 100,000 to 150,000 a day.
Day 3: Paisu Pok at 7 am, Paisu Batango and Poganda beach
Be at Paisu Pok Lake by seven, before the day visitors from Luwuk arrive. Entry is IDR 5,000; a canoe is IDR 30,000 and a paddleboard IDR 100,000 an hour. Sleeping in Luk Panenteng is what makes the early swim possible, and the water is at its clearest while the lake is still empty.

After that, Paisu Batango is a short ride away, a lagoon where fresh spring water meets the sea, and Poganda beach (entry about IDR 10,000) is the place for lunch and an afternoon swim. On a Saturday or Sunday, swap this day with Day 4 if you can; weekends fill the lake.
Day 4: the blue-pool caves and the drive to Salakan
The limestone caves at Bab’banang and Susendeng hold pools the same blue as the lake. They are an hour or more from Luk Panenteng and the turn-offs are unsigned, so go with your homestay’s recommendation of a local guide, bring a headtorch and swim only where they swim.

From the caves, a car with driver takes you across the island to Salakan, the regency capital, about three hours from the lake. A full day of car and driver on Peleng costs IDR 1,000,000 to 1,500,000. Salakan has wisma guesthouses with air conditioning for IDR 250,000 to 350,000; our guide to where to stay in the Banggai Islands lists the ones guests have liked.
Day 5: Teduang, Bone-Pompon and Mandel on the east coast
Three beaches that often get listed under Banggai Laut are on Peleng, close to Salakan. Teduang, 15 minutes from town in Ambelang, has a heart-shaped patch of coral in its shallows. Bone-Pompon is at Lalong village, about 30 minutes away. Mandel, at Kombutokan village in the Totikum district, is about 40 km and an hour from Salakan and usually empty.

Do Mandel first while the light is low, then work back towards town. Sleep in Salakan again.
Banggai Islands Tour: Reefs, Cardinalfish & the Blue Lake
Day 6: across to Banggai Laut via the Tobing speedboat
Leave Salakan early. The Tobing jetty is about an hour south by car, and the shared speedboats to Banggai town take about 30 minutes for around IDR 80,000 a person; they fill and go through the morning. Banggai town is the old sultanate seat, with banks, a market that starts before dawn and warungs grilling fish for IDR 25,000 to 40,000 a plate. Our Banggai Laut guide covers the town, the beaches and the cardinalfish reefs in detail.
Spend the afternoon on the waterfront and around the old palace, and eat by the harbour. Sleep at Hotel Banggai (about IDR 500,000) or a family homestay such as Monondok (IDR 150,000 to 250,000).
Day 7: Bontolan at first light, then a boat day to Tanjung Gundul
Bontolan beach is 15 minutes from town and the place to see the Banggai cardinalfish, a small striped fish that lives wild only in this archipelago. Go first thing, while the water is calm and clear, and do not touch the anemones it shelters in.

Then take the boat day, IDR 500,000 to 1,000,000 for the boat, shared by whoever is on it. From Pasir Putih village it is 15 minutes to Tanjung Gundul, a pebble headland with a rock arch big enough to swim through at the right tide. Teluk Lalong, the blue-green lagoon around the corner, is one to photograph from the rocks: villagers say saltwater crocodiles live in it. Stop at Oyama, a tiny cove with a mangrove boardwalk, and Pasir Panjang on the way back. Check the tide table in town the evening before.
Day 8: Mbuang-Mbuang and the jellyfish lake
Mbuang-Mbuang lies about 80 km south-east of Banggai town in the Bowokan group. Its salt lake, Paisu Batongan, is full of stingless jellyfish you can swim among, and Popisi Hill above it has the view most people come for. A private speedboat takes about two hours each way and costs up to IDR 4,000,000 for the boat; the public slow boat takes seven to eight hours and does not work as a day trip.
This is the day the weather decides. From December to February it is often off the table, and even in the dry season the boatman will call it if the sea is up. If it falls through, the town and the reefs fill a spare day easily.
Day 9: the morning ferry back to Luwuk
The ferry leaves Banggai town at about 08:00 on Tuesdays and Thursdays and reaches Luwuk in the afternoon; deck fares start around IDR 130,000, paid in cash at the terminal. Ask at the terminal the day before, because the departure can shift. Sleep in Luwuk and fly out on Day 10; nothing reliable connects the afternoon arrival to a same-day flight.
Shorter versions: 7, 5 and 3 days
Seven days
Drop Mbuang-Mbuang and the second Luwuk day. Do Teduang and Bone-Pompon on the morning of Day 5, reach the Tobing jetty by early afternoon and sleep in Banggai town that night. Day 6 is the boat day, and Day 7 is the ferry back, so start on a Wednesday or a Friday.
Five days
Five days covers Peleng and Banggai Laut only if transport is arranged for you, because the public boats eat a day each way. Our private five-day trip takes the evening ferry to Salakan on Day 1, crosses to Banggai Laut via Tobing for its beaches on Day 2, spends Day 3 at Paisu Pok and Poganda, does Mandel and Bone-Pompon on Day 4 before the boat back to Luwuk, and visits Laumarang Waterfall on Day 5 before the flight. On your own with five days, do Peleng only and add a day of Luwuk waterfalls.
Three days
With public boats, Paisu Pok needs two nights on Peleng: the boat arrives in the afternoon and the only boat back leaves Leme-Leme at about 08:00. In three days the realistic plan is a speedboat day trip to the lake from Luwuk, which is what our Banggai Islands day tour does, with a waterfall day either side. The 3-day Luwuk Banggai island-hopping trip packages the same idea with hotel nights in Luwuk.
What the 9 days cost
On your own, two people sharing rooms, cars and boats should budget roughly IDR 4 to 7 million each for the nine days on the ground, about USD 225 to 390 at October 2026 rates, plus flights to Luwuk. The full breakdown, including food and scooter hire, is in our Banggai Islands trip cost guide; the items that make up this route are below.
| Item | Cost | Notes |
| Wooden boat Luwuk to Leme-Leme | About IDR 55,000 a person | Early afternoon, about 2 h |
| Car with driver on Peleng | IDR 1,000,000 to 1,500,000 a day | For the car; plan on two to three days |
| Shared speedboat Tobing to Banggai town | About IDR 80,000 a person | About 30 min |
| Boat day on Banggai Laut | IDR 500,000 to 1,000,000 | For the boat |
| Speedboat to Mbuang-Mbuang | Up to IDR 4,000,000 | For the boat, about 2 h each way |
| Ferry Banggai town to Luwuk | From IDR 130,000 a person | Tue and Thu, about 08:00 |
| Rooms, eight nights | IDR 150,000 to 900,000 a night | Homestays on the islands, hotels in Luwuk |
The single biggest line is the Mbuang-Mbuang speedboat. Shared between four it is a fair price for the day; for two people it doubles the cost of the trip, which is the honest reason many visitors leave it out.
When to go
May to October is the sailing season, and September and October are the driest and calmest months. From December to February the swell cancels some crossings outright, the beach boats stay in harbour and Mbuang-Mbuang is usually not possible. Boats to Peleng run all year, so a wet-season trip is still possible if it stays on Peleng and keeps a spare day.
Avoid Idul Fitri week and the weekends around it: the boats fill with people going home and Paisu Pok fills with day visitors.
Mistakes that cost a day
- Taking the Salakan ferry when you want the lake. It is the wrong side of Peleng, three hours by road from Paisu Pok.
- Planning to reach Banggai Laut on the direct ferry on a Tuesday or Thursday. It usually does not sail those days; go through Tobing instead.
- Arriving on Banggai Laut with no cash on a Saturday. The town ATMs are often empty by the weekend; bring enough from Luwuk.
- Booking the flight home for the afternoon of the ferry day. The ferry arrives in the afternoon and is sometimes late.
- Chartering a speedboat for one or two people when the public boat does the same crossing for IDR 55,000.
Five days covers Paisu Pok Lake on Peleng and the beaches of Banggai Laut. Seven days lets you do it on public boats without rushing, and nine days adds the Mbuang-Mbuang jellyfish lake and a day of Luwuk waterfalls. With only three days, see the lake on a speedboat day trip from Luwuk.
Go out from Luwuk to Peleng on the afternoon wooden boat, cross Peleng to Salakan, take the 30-minute shared speedboat from Tobing to Banggai town, and come back on the Tuesday or Thursday morning ferry to Luwuk. The Tobing speedboat runs daily, so only the return needs planning.
Drive about an hour from Salakan to the Tobing jetty, then take a shared speedboat to Banggai town, about 30 minutes and around IDR 80,000 a person. The boats fill and leave through the morning, so arrive at the jetty early.
Yes, by speedboat. A private speedboat reaches Peleng in about an hour, which makes the lake, Paisu Batango and Poganda beach possible in one long day. On the public wooden boat it takes two nights, because the only boat back leaves Leme-Leme at about 08:00.
May to October, with September and October the driest and calmest. From December to February some crossings are cancelled and the jellyfish lake on Mbuang-Mbuang is usually out of reach. Avoid Idul Fitri week, when boats and Paisu Pok are crowded.
