The Togian Islands are a group of 56 islands in the Tomini Gulf off Central Sulawesi, reached by boat from Ampana on the mainland or by overnight ferry from Gorontalo. They are the better-known choice for diving and slow days in a beach bungalow, while the Banggai Islands east of Luwuk get fewer visitors and have Paisu Pok Lake.
We are a local team based in Luwuk and we do not run Togian trips. Travellers ask us every season which of the two to pick, and some want both, so this is the honest answer. Boat days and times below were checked against Indonesian sources in October 2026 and change with the weather.

Where are the Togian Islands?
The islands belong to Tojo Una-Una regency, whose capital Ampana sits on the mainland coast to the south. Together they cover about 763 km² of land with around 42,500 people (mid-2025 estimate). The largest are Batudaka, Togean, Talatakoh, Walea Kodi, Walea Bahi, Malenge and the volcanic Una-Una.
Wakai, a village on Batudaka with the islands’ hospital, is where public boats and the Gorontalo ferry land; most lodges collect guests there. The sea around the islands has been a national park since 2004, about 362,000 hectares and nearly all water, and UNESCO named the wider Togean Tojo Una-Una Biosphere Reserve in 2019.
People here fish, farm coconut and clove, and on Talatakoh the Bajau village of Kabalutan stands on stilts over the water. Malenge is known locally as monkey island for the Togian macaque, a species found only in these islands. The forests also hold the Togian babirusa (Babyrousa togeanensis), a tusked wild pig that lives nowhere else and is listed as Endangered by the IUCN, with numbers conservation groups describe as drastically low.
How to get to the Togian Islands
Ampana works for anyone already on the Central Sulawesi mainland; Gorontalo works for people coming down from Manado. For the bigger picture of distances across the island, see our Sulawesi travel guide.
From Ampana
Ampana is roughly 370 km and 8 to 10 hours by road from Palu, and about 230 km from Luwuk; allow 6 to 8 hours for that drive with stops. Wings Air resumed Palu to Ampana flights in March 2025, about 50 minutes in the air, but the schedule is thin, so check it before building a plan around it.
Public boats leave Ampana for Wakai in the morning, usually between 09:00 and 11:00. The slow boats take 4 to 6 hours with stops, a speedboat about 1.5 hours, and public fares run around IDR 60,000 to 100,000 (as of 2025). Days and boats change often; ask at the Ampana harbour the afternoon before.

From Gorontalo
The ASDP ferry KMP Tuna Tomini runs Gorontalo to Wakai, and on to Ampana. In August 2025 it left Gorontalo on Tuesday and Friday at 16:00 WITA and Wakai on Monday and Thursday at 17:00, an overnight crossing of roughly 12 to 13 hours. Around Idul Fitri 2026 it ran daily for a few weeks. Tickets are sold through ASDP’s Ferizy system or at the port.

From Manado, Gorontalo is about 9 hours by car or 10 by bus, and Wings Air flies the route every evening (as of 2025). That makes Manado to the Togian Islands a two-day journey: reach Gorontalo first, then take the Tuesday or Friday ferry.
When is the best time to visit the Togian Islands?
April to October is the window, and July and August bring the calmest crossings and the most foreign visitors. From December to February small-boat crossings get cancelled and some lodges close for part of January and February, so a fixed itinerary becomes risky.
The Banggai Islands run on almost the same calendar: May to October, with September and October the driest. If you want both in one trip, September and October are the months when both island groups are reliable and neither is busy.
What the Togian Islands are like
Diving is the reason most people come. The islands sit in the Coral Triangle, with fringing, barrier and patch reefs and atolls in one area, an endemic coral called Acropora togeannensis and about 596 fish species recorded in national park surveys. In the same waters lies a US B-24 bomber that ditched in May 1945 and now sits upright on sand at roughly 16 to 24 m.

Una-Una is the volcano on the western edge. Mount Colo erupted from July 1983 and pyroclastic flows swept most of the island, but about 7,000 residents had been evacuated in time; its 11 villages are inhabited again, and its reefs are a regular dive trip from the other islands.

Togian has its own stingless jellyfish lake, at Lembanato village, just over a hectare of brackish water ringed by trees. Banggai’s equivalent, Paisu Batongan on Mbuang-Mbuang, is about 20 hectares; our Mbuang-Mbuang jellyfish lake guide covers how to get there.

Most beds are in bungalow lodges on Kadidiri, Malenge, Batudaka and Una-Una, priced per person with three meals. Listings in 2024 and 2025 ran from about IDR 250,000 to 450,000 a person a night. Many run generators for a few evening hours only, and there is no reliable ATM on the islands, so bring cash from Ampana or Gorontalo.
Togian Islands or Banggai Islands: an honest comparison
| Togian Islands | Banggai Islands | |
| Getting there | Boat from Ampana (1.5 to 6 h) or overnight ferry from Gorontalo, about twice a week | Fly Makassar to Luwuk in about 75 minutes, then a 2-hour wooden boat to Peleng for about IDR 55,000 |
| Main draw | Diving, reef walls, a WWII wreck, the Una-Una volcano | Paisu Pok Lake, the wild Banggai cardinalfish, empty beaches |
| Diving and snorkelling | Established dive scene; the stronger choice for scuba | Mostly snorkelling from small boats; cardinalfish in standing depth |
| Jellyfish lake | Lembanato, about 1 hectare | Paisu Batongan on Mbuang-Mbuang, about 20 hectares, 2 h by speedboat |
| Where you sleep | Bungalow lodges, full board, about IDR 250,000 to 450,000 per person | Family homestays, about IDR 150,000 to 250,000 a room, often with dinner |
| Other visitors | A steady backpacker and diver circuit, busiest July and August | Few foreign visitors; Indonesian day trippers at Paisu Pok on weekends |
| Best for | Divers and people who want a week in one bay | Snorkellers, lake swimmers and anyone who wants the beaches to themselves |

If scuba is the point of the trip, go to Togian; Banggai has nothing like its dive scene. If you want a freshwater lake with 10 to 15 m of visibility and nobody else in it at 7 am, Paisu Pok costs IDR 5,000 to enter and our Paisu Pok Lake guide explains why sleeping nearby matters.
Accommodation is the other real difference. Togian has a lodge culture built around foreign guests. Banggai has no resort at all, just village homestays and small hotels, which our Banggai Islands accommodation guide lists island by island.
Gorontalo to Luwuk: Whale Sharks, Waterfalls & Paisu Pok
How to combine the Togian Islands with Banggai
Both routes below take a full travel day or a night on a ferry, so give each island group at least four nights or the transfers eat the trip. End in Luwuk if you can: it has several flights a day to Makassar, while Ampana’s flights are few.
By road: Wakai, Ampana, Luwuk
Take the morning boat from Wakai to Ampana, sleep there, and drive east the next morning; the road runs through Pagimana to Luwuk in 6 to 8 hours. Do not plan to drive it at night. You will reach Luwuk after the early-afternoon public boat to Peleng has left, so sleep in Luwuk and take it the next day; our day-by-day Banggai Islands itinerary picks up from there.
By sea: Togian, Gorontalo, Luwuk
- Wakai to Gorontalo on the Tuna Tomini, Monday or Thursday at 17:00, arriving the next morning.
- A day in Gorontalo for the whale sharks, which come close to shore in shallow water, though sightings are seasonal.
- Gorontalo to Pagimana on the KMP Tanjung Api at 20:00 WITA, about 11 hours overnight; it leaves Gorontalo every other day.
- Pagimana to Luwuk by car, about 2 to 3 hours.
That second route is exactly how our 6-day Luwuk and Gorontalo trip starts: whale sharks on day 1, the overnight ferry, then Luwuk’s waterfalls, Paisu Pok and Peleng’s caves. For 4 people it costs about USD 420 each (IDR 7,500,000), and it begins in Gorontalo, so you can arrive from Togian the day before.

If you have time after Peleng, Banggai Laut is the far end of the archipelago, with the best reefs and the old sultanate town; see our Banggai Laut travel guide. The direct ferry from Luwuk usually sails on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at around 16:00 or 21:00 and arrives the next morning.
What we can help with, and what we cannot
We do not sell Togian trips, book Togian lodges or arrange the Ampana boats, and we would rather say so than pass you to someone we cannot vouch for. On the Banggai side we handle the car from Pagimana, the boats, the homestays and the timing around the ferries.
If you are planning Togian first and want Banggai after it, send us your Togian dates and we will tell you which ferry day gets you to Paisu Pok soonest.

Most travellers take a public boat from Ampana to Wakai: about 1.5 hours by speedboat or 4 to 6 hours on the slow boat, leaving in the morning. The other way is the overnight ASDP ferry from Gorontalo, which in 2025 sailed on Tuesdays and Fridays at 16:00. Lodges collect guests from Wakai.
April to October, when the Tomini Gulf is calm and boats run reliably. July and August have the calmest water and the most visitors; September and October are quieter. December to February brings cancelled crossings, and some lodges close for part of January and February, so avoid fixed plans then.
For scuba diving, Togian. It has an established dive scene, reef walls, the B-24 bomber wreck and trips to Una-Una. Banggai is better for snorkelling: the endemic Banggai cardinalfish lives in water you can stand in, and the clearest swimming is in Paisu Pok, a freshwater lake on Peleng.
Yes, two ways. By road, take the boat from Wakai to Ampana and drive 6 to 8 hours east to Luwuk. By sea, take the ferry from Wakai to Gorontalo, then the overnight Gorontalo to Pagimana ferry and a 2 to 3 hour drive to Luwuk. Allow at least four nights on each island group.
Plan at least four nights on the islands plus a travel day each way. The Gorontalo ferry sails only about twice a week, and the Ampana boats can be cancelled by wind, so a short stay often turns into one spent waiting for a boat. A week lets you dive, visit Una-Una and see the jellyfish lake.
Yes. A small lake at Lembanato village, just over a hectare of brackish water, holds jellyfish that have lost most of their sting and is reached by boat. Central Sulawesi has a second, larger one: Paisu Batongan on Mbuang-Mbuang in the Banggai Islands, about 20 hectares.
