Read that table twice before you book anything. Makassar runs roughly five services a day. Manado runs closer to one every other day. Palu runs about twice a week and has a history of appearing and disappearing with the season. A plan that depends on Palu is not a plan.
Route everything through Makassar. It is the only Luwuk connection with enough daily frequency that a delay somewhere else in your journey does not end your trip.
Flying to Luwuk from Bali
There is no direct flight from Denpasar to Luwuk and there never has been. Every route goes through Makassar, and the good news is that Denpasar to Makassar is one of the busiest domestic corridors in the country, with Garuda, Lion Air, Batik Air, Citilink and others all running it several times a day.
The realistic Bali to Luwuk day looks like this. Morning flight Denpasar to Makassar, roughly an hour and a half. Two or three hours on the ground. Early afternoon flight Makassar to Luwuk, an hour and ten. In Luwuk by mid afternoon, with a night in town before the boats the next day.
It is a long day but it is a single day, and it is comfortably done if you book the two legs with a real gap between them.
Flying to Luwuk from Jakarta
Same structure, different first leg. Jakarta to Makassar is around two hours and twenty minutes with a wide choice of carriers, then the same connection on to Luwuk. Some itineraries route Jakarta travellers through Makassar with a single airline, which is worth looking for because it puts your bag through and gives you protection if the first leg runs late.

Flying to Luwuk from Singapore and overseas
No international flight lands at Luwuk. What you are looking for is the shortest path to Makassar, and from Singapore that is a Scoot service that runs nonstop about four times a week in roughly three hours and ten minutes. Two flights, total, from Changi to Luwuk.

One local habit worth copying. Domestic fares here climb hard in the final two weeks and almost never fall. Book the Makassar to Luwuk leg as soon as your dates are firm, because waiting has no upside on this route.
The connection mistake that ruins the day
Here is the trap. You find a cheap Denpasar to Makassar flight landing at 13:20, and a Makassar to Luwuk flight leaving at 14:30. Seventy minutes. It looks fine on a screen.
It is not fine. These are two separate tickets. You collect your bag, walk to domestic departures, check in again and clear security. On a quiet morning that is forty minutes. On a busy afternoon with a delayed inbound it is not happening, and because the tickets are unconnected nobody owes you the next flight.
- Leave three hours minimum between a domestic arrival and your Luwuk departure.
- Leave four if you are arriving on an international flight and clearing immigration.
- Take the earlier flight into Makassar even if it costs a little more. The buffer is the product you are buying.
- Or sleep in Makassar. Airport hotels are cheap and the city is genuinely worth an evening.
We have met a lot of guests in Luwuk a day later than they intended. Every single time, the cause was a connection in Makassar that looked long enough on a booking site.
Arriving at Luwuk airport
Bubung is a small airport and that is entirely in your favour. One terminal, a short walk from aircraft to the door, bags out quickly. From wheels down to standing outside with your luggage is usually under twenty minutes.
- Getting into town: about 15 minutes by car. Drivers wait outside for arrivals, or your hotel will send someone if you ask.
- Cash: draw it in Luwuk town, not at the airport. Town has reliable bank ATMs, the islands effectively have none.
- SIM cards: buy in Luwuk. Telkomsel has by far the best coverage across the archipelago and it is not close.
- Onward boats: all leave from Luwuk town, not the airport, and all leave in the afternoon.

Is Luwuk worth a day of its own?
More than people expect. It is a working coastal town of about fifty thousand, wrapped around a bay, with hills directly behind it. Bukit Kasih Sayang gives you the whole town and bay in one view and takes twenty minutes to reach. The Salodik waterfalls are a short drive inland. Pulau Dua, off Balantak, is a genuinely lovely day out along the coast road.
