Luwuk has an airport, it has flights most days, and getting here is far easier than the emptiness of the place suggests. What it does not have is a direct flight from anywhere outside Indonesia, which is why so many people conclude it is unreachable and go to Bali instead.
This is the full picture of flying into Luwuk in 2026. Which airlines, which routes, how often, what it costs, and the connection trap that catches most first timers.

Every direct flight to Luwuk
Three routes, two airlines. That is the whole map, and one route carries close to nine in ten passengers.
| From | Airport | Airline | Roughly per month | Flight time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Makassar | UPG | Batik Air | About 155 | 1 h 10 m |
| Manado | MDC | Wings Air | About 14 | 1 h 35 m |
| Palu | PLW | Wings Air | About 9 | 1 h 15 m |
Read that table twice before you book anything. Makassar runs roughly five services a day. Manado runs closer to one every other day. Palu runs about twice a week and has a history of appearing and disappearing with the season. A plan that depends on Palu is not a plan.
Route everything through Makassar. It is the only Luwuk connection with enough daily frequency that a delay somewhere else in your journey does not end your trip.

Flying to Luwuk from Bali
There is no direct flight from Denpasar to Luwuk and there never has been. Every route goes through Makassar, and the good news is that Denpasar to Makassar is one of the busiest domestic corridors in the country, with Garuda, Lion Air, Batik Air, Citilink and others all running it several times a day.
The realistic Bali to Luwuk day looks like this. Morning flight Denpasar to Makassar, roughly an hour and a half. Two or three hours on the ground. Early afternoon flight Makassar to Luwuk, an hour and ten. In Luwuk by mid afternoon, with a night in town before the boats the next day.
It is a long day but it is a single day, and it is comfortably done if you book the two legs with a real gap between them.
Flying to Luwuk from Jakarta
Same structure, different first leg. Jakarta to Makassar is around two hours and twenty minutes with a wide choice of carriers, then the same connection on to Luwuk. Some itineraries route Jakarta travellers through Makassar with a single airline, which is worth looking for because it puts your bag through and gives you protection if the first leg runs late.
Our separate guide on getting to Luwuk Banggai from Jakarta and Bali goes through the timings in more depth, including the overland alternatives if you want to see Sulawesi on the way.
Flying to Luwuk from Singapore and overseas
No international flight lands at Luwuk. What you are looking for is the shortest path to Makassar, and from Singapore that is a Scoot service that runs nonstop about four times a week in roughly three hours and ten minutes. Two flights, total, from Changi to Luwuk.
From Europe, Australia or anywhere further afield, the pattern is the same with an extra hop. Get to Jakarta or Makassar however suits you, then pick up the domestic leg. We have written the Singapore version up in full in our Singapore to Banggai Islands route guide.
What flights to Luwuk cost
Makassar to Luwuk sits in a fairly narrow band because Batik Air has the route largely to itself. Expect somewhere around IDR 800,000 to 1,500,000 one way, which is roughly USD 45 to 85, moving with season and how late you leave it.
| Leg | Typical one way | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Makassar to Luwuk | USD 45 to 85 | Batik Air, little competition |
| Denpasar to Makassar | USD 35 to 70 | Many carriers, book early for the low end |
| Jakarta to Makassar | USD 45 to 90 | Wide choice, frequent |
| Singapore to Makassar | USD 75 to 130 | Scoot nonstop, 4 times a week |
| Manado to Luwuk | USD 50 to 95 | Wings Air, thin frequency |
One local habit worth copying. Domestic fares here climb hard in the final two weeks and almost never fall. Book the Makassar to Luwuk leg as soon as your dates are firm, because waiting has no upside on this route.

The connection mistake that ruins the day
Here is the trap. You find a cheap Denpasar to Makassar flight landing at 13:20, and a Makassar to Luwuk flight leaving at 14:30. Seventy minutes. It looks fine on a screen.
It is not fine. These are two separate tickets. You collect your bag, walk to domestic departures, check in again and clear security. On a quiet morning that is forty minutes. On a busy afternoon with a delayed inbound it is not happening, and because the tickets are unconnected nobody owes you the next flight.
- Leave three hours minimum between a domestic arrival and your Luwuk departure.
- Leave four if you are arriving on an international flight and clearing immigration.
- Take the earlier flight into Makassar even if it costs a little more. The buffer is the product you are buying.
- Or sleep in Makassar. Airport hotels are cheap and the city is genuinely worth an evening.
We have met a lot of guests in Luwuk a day later than they intended. Every single time, the cause was a connection in Makassar that looked long enough on a booking site.

Arriving at Luwuk airport
Bubung is a small airport and that is entirely in your favour. One terminal, a short walk from aircraft to the door, bags out quickly. From wheels down to standing outside with your luggage is usually under twenty minutes.
- Getting into town: about 15 minutes by car. Drivers wait outside for arrivals, or your hotel will send someone if you ask.
- Cash: draw it in Luwuk town, not at the airport. Town has reliable bank ATMs, the islands effectively have none.
- SIM cards: buy in Luwuk. Telkomsel has by far the best coverage across the archipelago and it is not close.
- Onward boats: all leave from Luwuk town, not the airport, and all leave in the afternoon.
That last point decides your first day. If you land in the late afternoon or evening, you are staying in Luwuk. Book a room rather than discovering it at the harbour. The full breakdown of crossings is in our Luwuk to Banggai Islands ferry guide.

Is Luwuk worth a day of its own?
More than people expect. It is a working coastal town of about fifty thousand, wrapped around a bay, with hills directly behind it. Bukit Kasih Sayang gives you the whole town and bay in one view and takes twenty minutes to reach. The Salodik waterfalls are a short drive inland. Pulau Dua, off Balantak, is a genuinely lovely day out along the coast road.
If your flights leave you a spare day, it is not a wasted one. Our guide to nine places around Luwuk Banggai covers what to do with it.

Frequently asked questions
What is the airport code for Luwuk?

Are there international flights to Luwuk?
No. Luwuk handles domestic services only. All international arrivals connect through Makassar, Jakarta or Manado.
How long is the flight from Makassar to Luwuk?
About one hour and ten minutes, with Batik Air operating roughly five flights a day.
Can I fly direct from Bali to Luwuk?
No. Denpasar to Luwuk always connects, almost always through Makassar. Allow a full travel day.
Is there an airport in the Banggai Islands themselves?
There is an airstrip at Banggai Laut served intermittently by small aircraft, and Susi Air has operated a thirty minute hop from Luwuk on twelve seat planes. Frequency is thin and the service is not dependable enough to build a trip around. Almost everyone arrives by boat.

The one line version
Fly to Makassar from wherever you are, connect to Luwuk with Batik Air, and leave three hours between the two. Everything else about reaching the Banggai Islands is easier than people fear.
Once you have the flights, the boats are the next puzzle, and we have written that one up in the ferry guide. If you would rather hand the whole chain to someone else, our five day trip starts at the airport door.
